Introduction
You'll find all my research towards the thriller genre on this page, I'm conducting this to help develop my understanding of the thriller genre, giving me access to great ideas and influences towards my research and planning, to eventually lead up to the final assessed piece of where I need to produce a opening sequence based upon the thriller genre.
I'm not very familiar with the thriller genre so that's why its important for me to conduct this research to help strengthen my understanding of thrillers so allowing me to apply it to my work effectively.
Everything below has helped towards the production of the thriller opening sequence. I've evaluated myself on how I believe each task went and what more I could do for my research of understanding of the thriller genre. Work below is carried out by myself to help enhance my skills in applying this for my thriller production.
Defining the Thriller Genre
Below I created using a prezi a brief introduction, of identifying the thriller genre to allow me to identify with the typical conventions and codes that are used for a thriller genre to be established.
This will provide great insight and influence to me as it will improve my knowledge of the thriller genre, allowing me to strengthen my knowledge for when I come to
Using Prezi, I've managed to construct an analysis of defining the thriller genre. From this I was able to strongly identify with the thriller genre and what it consisted of, allowing me to understand and identify the typical conventions and expectation placed into a thriller so that I can apply it to my work during research and planning stages and the definitions that came from this confidently and coherently.
The Thriller Convention Mind map
Below I will create a mind map based upon the genre thriller and what conventions and codes are typically used for the genre to be identified.
Using Bubbl, I will explore all elements within the genre and what they typically display, discussing upon Mise en scene as well as technical aspects to ,such as camerawork, editing and effects importantly finding out how and why they're all typically included in thriller genres.
Overall, after the completion of the mind map, I realized many key conventions that need to be considered when constructing a successful thriller film. I found the use of Mise en scene to be interesting as each element is fundamental for audiences to be able to fully identify the genre without the need to informed, so to construct a successful thriller intro, I would need to explore further in to elements to gain an informative idea of appealing to my target audience, as well as including all the conventions of a thriller, successfully getting audiences to feel surprised, suspense, excited and shocked, this bubble map has informed me of a wide range of information that I need to know to enhance my knowledge of producing a successful thriller sequence.
By looking and researching the thriller genre, I've discorved that the main purpose for this genre is to incite fear, suspense and excitment amongst a thrill seeking audience, mainly this is used by many elements, many of which consist of the typical characters of innocent bystanders where are seen as the first to die, represented as pretty, non-intellect young girls with the protagonist invovled in plots such as being stalked, hunted and vunerable from the antagonist, again the protagonist in thrillers are seen as vunerable (depending on gender) yet resourceful and fast aginst the mind of the antagonist, who than gets killed at the end. The antagonist is represented through concealed indentity, typically performing acts of violence and murders in scary masks and hoods so we can not decipher who the character is untill the very end. Antagonists normally have motifs of murder due to a tramatising past or revenge on their mind, explaining why they set out to kill specific victims in the most gory way, audience typically in thrillers do not get told the identity of the killer untill the very end where the antagonist and protagonist clash and attempt to kill one another. The plot consists of elements of fear and danger at every turn, with the unsuspecting audiences witnessing plot twists and revealed identity whom they did not possabl think of, leading to shocks and surprises, inticing audiences into the film making them feel enticed and in suspense throughout the film.
The typical setting I've found to be typical in thrillers would be dark, isolated places, locations such as woods, alleyways, old buildings connote feelings of death, stalked, hunted and the feeling that you are not alone really place audience on edge and creates high climax, especially for the audience who normally expects to see in thrillers, plot scenarios of leading to being chased, hunted and murder, or typically being tounted and played with before they die creating suspense and shock turns.
I strongly think that theorist Rick Altman has a big influence on my mind map, his theory proposes the Semantic, Syntactic and pragmatic approach where key conventions are all included, so what audience expects to see when watching a specific film and how that narrative follows, this then leads to how audiences take this either being passive or active, it allows audiences to have a better perception of films and genre, Altman has had a key influence on my thriller research so far as it gets you to think about the expectations needed to be included to create a thriller and how audiences understanding will be affected by this.
Another genre theorist is Steven Neale’s Repetition and Difference Theory, where rather having the same plot every time, genre can contain both repetition and difference to target audiences, so predictable endings are receive positively by particular target audiences however he also argues that being different and adapting over time is also essential to the success of the genre so audiences wouldn’t get bored of the same plot every movie.
I find that Neale’s theory links in closely to Altman’s and I find that using both his and Altman’s approach, I can work on creating a successful thriller opening, especially as Neale touches upon having the predictable codes and conventions in appealing to the target audience so they can instantly recognise the genre. Last theorist is Metz's Genre Development Theory where he explains that genre develops over time, and has four stages: experimental, classical, parody and deconstruction here these four stages go through a circle of changes during the film industry.
Genre Theory
Below, I will be using Prezi to construct an in depth analysis of the main genre theorists that can be of influence towards my work, each theory offers a different approach to genre and how they develop throughout time, providing insights that can help serve towards my thriller opening sequence as well as my further research and planning.
Overall, I found this presentation to be very insightful and also informative regarding each genre theorist, proving useful to me as I can always refer back to it as a guide for my ideas and further research, enhancing the overall success of my thriller sequence.
It also allows me to successfully apply these genre theories throughout my work, easily making work more understanding as the theorists ideas are applied.
History of the Thriller Genre 1920s-present 2015
I shall now conduct this task to explore key films that have influenced and developed the thriller genre over time, I will be discussing relevant directors who have created the basic conventions within the genre and those who have helped to mould it throughout time until the present.
This task will help to understand the thriller genre more in depth, giving me successful examples that have provided conventions and codes into understanding a thriller, this can enhance my knowledge efficiently and guide me through the research and planning stages.
This task has helped me to understand about the thriller film industry and the successful films that have helped to develop this throughout time, I also found out about key director Alfred Hitchcock and his fundamental importance within the thriller world and how his influence has created many pathways for directors to produce films under the thriller genre.
The task has helped me to identify the successful films throughout time and why they were so successful, informing me of the conventions and codes set in place to assist me throughout research and when I come to create my own thriller sequence.
Analysis of similar texts- Saw (2004, James Wan), The Hunger Games (2012, Francis Lawrence and Scream (1996, Wes Craven)
In class, we were tasked to complete three mind maps based on thriller films and what the expectations and conventions were, this was to later aid us in our ideas and plans in creating our own sequence, I decided to research the thriller films, The Hunger Games (2012,13,14) directed by Francis Lawrence, Saw (2004) directed by James Wan and Shutter Island (2010) directed by Martin Scorsese, each different years of release, and have different sub-genres merged together, soon after I've completed all three film analysis, I want to combine them all and investigate what it takes to make a thriller opening.
Below are all the analysis of the key conventions, this time I decided to go for Horror, Slasher, psychological genre merged with thriller, so I decided to go with Saw released in 2004, directed by James Wan, I allowed myself to watch this movie even though I'm not a big thriller watcher, especially plots like this, however I'm realizing now that as the media tasks go on, I'm watching more and more thrillers and horrors that I would not normally do, I find that it is helping a lot as I can connect many films to my research, especially now that I'm looking at different plots to investigate for my own thriller opening sequence. Saw is a lot more darker than compared with The Hunger Games yet I found that these tasks are great resources allowing me to research all kinds of sub-merged thrillers, next time I want to go on to research a slightly different submerged thriller to show more of an independent and broader way of thinking, so using the software program Bubbl, I've managed to look at similar texts and delve into the key conventions from each film, looking at how this will aid me in my production, I've placed in my thoughts on how each one went below.
Saw (2004, Directed by James Wan) was the first film thriller I looked into, I wanted to start of with a well known sub merged thriller and what better than the 2004 film Saw, I found that a vast majority of my target audience have watched this, so I wanted to take the key conventions and narrative from this and apply to my own planning and production. Before this task, I've never seen the film before so it was great watching it from a first perspective to see what I thought of it and ideas I had, so I can also apply this to the task.
I noted down all the key conventions founded from Saw, and started to notice that the plot relied mainly on the element of surprise and shock, I found the plot twist at the end especially thrilling and adventurous not only giving me key conventions but also ideas for my production. The element of concealed identity and games played for fun in cost of innocent peoples lives is one genre of thriller merged with elements of horror, psychological and mystery, providing audiences with that ultimate suspense atmosphere and climax.
The Hunger Games, 2012, Director Francis Lawrence, Thriller Analysis
The Hunger Games film franchise is one thriller films that I am familiar with, having genres merged with adventure, fiction and sci-fi, it is not one of the screamy thrillers that I've come to watch throughout the media project, it is PEGI rated 12A so its great that I explore thrillers from all aspects to see what is involved and typically expected within each one.
Scream 1996, Director Wes Craven, Thriller Analysis
The last bubbl presentation map I came to create was for the 1996 film Scream (Directed by Wes Craven), I also watched this film first time too and was immediately impressed with the opening sequence, having a concealed killer commit a murder within the first few minutes of starting, from there I wanted to know who the killer was and was immediately consumed with guesses and assumptions on who the killer could be.
Scream is a typical thriller that again is popular next to Saw, it was good researching on two well known sub merged thrillers as it a great insight to how previous directors and producers have laid down the foundation guidelines to help these successful releases.
Analysis of Similar Texts
This power point briefly concludes as to how well the above task when with the analysis of similar texts, I looked over my investigations and found out what apects I found more important and informative.
I'm conducting this research to discuss upon the main genre theorists that can be influential towards my research and planning work, the genre theorists link into narrative, something that I can apply to when I come to create my thriller sequence opening.
I'm using the 1996 film released Scream (directed by Wes Craven) to identify the elements from the genre theorists to help communicate their ideas to me, this can then help me to decide how they're influence can enhance my own work.
Opening Sequence Analysis
I'll be analysing three thriller opening sequences from existing films to help me understand the thriller genre more and how to produce a strong opening, this will aid me very well when it comes to the creation of my own thriller sequence.
By doing this task it will help me to gain an understanding of the thriller conventions and codes that each opening sequence puts in, allowing audiences to easily identify each narrative as a thriller. I decided to present my work through Prezi, my three opening sequence analysis will be The Hunger Games Part 1 (2014, Director Francis Lawrence), Wrecker (2015, Director Michael Bafaro) and Carrie (2013, Director Kimberly Peirce).
Below is a Thriller opening sequence analysis of the 2014 blockbuster The Hungers Games part 1, directed by Francis Lawrence, I shall be analysing a wide range of thriller opening scenes which will give me an good understand of what to include in my own thriller opening. I have looked at mise en scene, cinematography, edits, camera shots, narrative and more. This has been a big task for me has given me experience of using the media terminology and genre theorists.
Opening Sequence Analysis one: Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, 2014
Opening Sequence Analysis two: Wrecker, 2015
House on The End of The Street, 2012, Mark Tonderai Psychological Horror
After the completion of this task, I've come to educate myself on the typical layout for titles throughout thrillers films, I'm glad that I researched many sub genres that lead back to the thriller genre as it widens my knowledge when I come to create my own thriller titles for the production sequence.
Title Sequence Analyse
In regards to the above task, I've constructed a title sequence analysis based upon the thriller openings I've watched, this being Insidious, House on the end of the Street, Detention and Cowboys and Aliens, this tasks will see me compare titles and credits in relevance of positioning, order of which title are in as well as font and colors to identify the key elements and conventions that our typically used within thriller films to construct an understanding of what to use for my own thriller production.
I will be analyzing into all methods of film funding options available for first time film makers like myself, as it will be extremely unlikely that conglomerates will fund my film project due to my lack of successful reputation or the built up clientele of my audiences.

Film Exhibition Research
I will be conducting this piece of research towards film exhibition, investigating the ways in which a film is shown to audiences and finding out how I can present my film production, taking into consideration of costs and financial expenses.
This task will be effective for myself as I can research methods into the best way of showing my film to my target audience but in cost effective processes.
Overall, this piece of research was very informative, I found out extensive research in regards to exhibition and what method could be best for myself and my film production, I think that cinema is a good way of presenting your film to audiences, however I may be beaten due to the competition from other film producers as well as the big names industries that show case more higher demanding films within the cinemas.
Therefore this task has provided me with excellent knowledge into exhibition, allowing me to go on to create my thriller production with this information in mind.
Audience Profile
I will be conducting research into my target audience for my thriller film, its important that I identify my target audiences lifestyle so that I can make my production appealing and identifiable to them, committing them ti watch the film and easily identify characters and their lifestyles
Thriller Film Market Analysis
I shall be researching into the film market within the industry, finding out about the top thriller films of 2014 and to go on to explain why they become so successful in terms of profits, ratings and critical acclaims as well as taken in to account of audience, I will be using website source IMBD as my point of focus as I go on to research each film individually in detail as to why each film was successful, finding out any information that can be used to apply to my own work.
This task will enhance my knowledge of film marketing and can be applied to my own work for when I come to create my thriller sequence.
Overall, I found that this task was very helpful in informing me of the film market within the industry, I've gathered detailed information regarding previous film releases as well as what my competition is, this being genre.
So with this information I can successfully go onto planning my film knowing about the market and what it takes to produce a successful thriller production.
Film Distribution Research
I shall be researching into Film Distribution to understand how to successfully market my thriller production within the industry, I'll be doing this by researching into the different ways to present my thriller film to my target audience, outlining the advantages and disadvantages within each one to than finally sum up an option that will be beneficial for me, this piece of of work will be most convenient to me as I can investigate into film distribution through two main methods of marketing and presenting, and how would each one link to my target audience.
Overall, I found this task was very helpful in terms of achieving an understanding to how I can present my thriller production as well as appealing to my target audience in the process.
I found that for me marketing through social media feeds would be highly effective for me as it is seen as a social norm that young people take to social media accounts daily, that way by marketing through here, it is more than likely to be seen by my target audience, hence enhancing the success rate of my production as a whole.
Focus Group
As a group, Abby, Danielle and myself gathered together a small group of people in order for us to gain responses in accordance towards our thriller sequence, here our group created a focus group in order to obtain ideas from our audiences, finding out what they would be interested in watching as well as gathering information based upon their opinions on plots, characters and settings, fundamentally as well in finding out about the different types of media that they have access to.
With this piece of primary research we can find out what they're looking for in a thriller film that we can use to make our thriller sequence opening.
Key Points Discovered
Below is the PowerPoint created by Abby of all the findings that we gathered from the audience focus group, this information gathered will be taken into consideration and applied for when our group move onto the creation of our final thriller opening sequence.

Opening Sequence Analysis one: Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, 2014
Opening Sequence Analysis two: Wrecker, 2015
Opening Sequence Analysis three: Carrie, 2013
After analysing all three thriller films, I've now achieved a clear understanding of the thriller conventions and codes that goes into an opening sequence, it will prove very worthwhile and handy for myself when I come to make my own thriller sequence, in regards to establishing the thriller genre through the uses of camerawork, mise en scene, lighting, sound and other such key technical aspects.
I find that for me what I found surprising was how the opening sequences portrayed little characters for their audiences, however I suppose this all added into the thriller element where it left audiences wanting to know more so that they continue watching the whole film.
I also found surprising how many things are all used in the shot to convey meaning to the audience, for them to be able to establish the narrative as well as the genre, this will defiantly be taken into account for when I come to make my thriller sequence, this can than enhance the success of my production as well as getting the audience to continue watching.
Representation of Characters in Thriller films
On this Prezi, I've identified the typical representations of characters in thriller films primarily focusing upon Vladimir Propps character roles within multiple thriller films to show my understanding of each representation between the genders.
I find that this prezi will help me for when I come to devise my own characters for my thriller production, the typical character conventions displayed here can easily communicate meaning to audiences, with this I can easily refer back to it when I come to create my characters for my own thriller opening.
Representation of Gender:
Below I've selected two movies to help me in the understanding towards the representation of gender in thriller films, I choose modern movies as I felt that I wanted to keep the representation up to date so it can be easily identifying to my audiences when understanding characters.
Representation of Gender- The Hunger Games
Below I've selected two movies to help me in the understanding towards the representation of gender in thriller films, I choose modern movies as I felt that I wanted to keep the representation up to date so it can be easily identifying to my audiences when understanding characters.
Representation of Gender- The Hunger Games
This film challenged the usual expectations held in place with female characters, setting in a new view altogether, this film set in a place a positive representation and goes against the typical character expectations, I quite like this as it offers something fresh and new for audiences.
Representation of Gender- James Bond, Casino Royale
This film conforms to the usual expectations held in place with the representation of gender, by making males to be the heroes and women to be the weaker sex. By conforming to this idea, this sets in place the old fashioned view that women are reliant on men, however using these characters makes it easier for an audience to identify them.
Title Sequence Timeline
Within this task, I've analysed existing thriller film openings to give me an understanding of the appropriate titles and credits that are typically displayed at the start of a thriller, giving me an understanding how titles and credits are displayed, as well as timings, fonts and positions to help me for when I come to create my own production, with this research done I can than make my own titles and credits based upon the conventions set from other previous thrillers.
Insidious, 2010, Director James Wan, Title Sequence Timeline Thriller Horror Mystery
House on The End of The Street, 2012, Mark Tonderai Psychological Horror
Detention, 2011, Directed by Joseph Kahn, Horror, Thriller and Sci Fi

Film Funding Research
I will be analyzing into all methods of film funding options available for first time film makers like myself, as it will be extremely unlikely that conglomerates will fund my film project due to my lack of successful reputation or the built up clientele of my audiences.
I shall research into each available option of film funding, investigating into the advantages and disadvantages as well as personally reflecting upon about each option and seeing if this could be best to fund my film, I will than evaluate and soon concluded into what option of film funding would be effective for myself and my production and why.
This research task will be important in understanding financial expenses that goes into funding a film, something of which that I can apply to my own thriller production when I come to produce it.
This research task will be important in understanding financial expenses that goes into funding a film, something of which that I can apply to my own thriller production when I come to produce it.

Overall, I found this task very useful and came to the conclusion that the funding method I would use would be funding through the BFI (British Film Institute), this industry will provide funds for first time movie makers judged upon the originality and creativity of ideas, allowing people funds to successfully create a film without no financial worries of having to repay this back if the film is unsuccessful, I find that this option will be best for me as this method is entirely funded and can gain me recognition and open doors of opportunity for myself, allowing me to produce my film to the best of possible success through their funds provided.
BBFC Research
This is my BBFC research I'm conducting to allow me to increase my knowledge to educate me about the UK's regulator of film and video, within this research I can apply into establishing my target audience, easily identifying the PEGI ratings and overall what film rating would be suitable for my thriller production.
Overall, I found that by completing this task it has given me good knowledge about the BBFC and what it has to offer, I've concluded that my thriller production will be rated PEGI 15, meaning that no one under this age is allowed to view my production due to unsuitable scenes that may terrorize or fundamentally influence a young audience, however I find that by classing my thriller production as PEGI 15 it would tie in with the thriller genre, as most films released under this genre is suitably designed for this intended audience and age.
Film Exhibition Research
I will be conducting this piece of research towards film exhibition, investigating the ways in which a film is shown to audiences and finding out how I can present my film production, taking into consideration of costs and financial expenses.

With this piece of primary research we can find out what they're looking for in a thriller film that we can use to make our thriller sequence opening.
Overall, I found the use of the focus group went down very effectively, our group had gathered detailed responses from each of the girls in what they expect to watch in a thriller film.
By using a focus group for this task, the girls whom fitted in with our target audiences managed to sit and discuss upon the successful thriller conventions that they expect to watch in a film, this has provided our group with great insights into producing a thriller that suits our target audience.
Their responses have been gathered and will be placed into a summary findings, outlining their responses from each of the questions so that we can quickly gain access to and apply for when we begin to plan our thriller production sequence.
Key Points Discovered
Below is the PowerPoint created by Abby of all the findings that we gathered from the audience focus group, this information gathered will be taken into consideration and applied for when our group move onto the creation of our final thriller opening sequence.
This PowerPoint was created by team member Abby
This power point will provide quick access for our group when we refer back to it, providing us with quick summaries of the focus groups answers within each question, this is less time consuming than watching the interview again and offers detail points about each responses from the questions.
Techniques I like
Below I've looked into the techniques I like involved in thriller films, the techniques I found intriguing here links in really well towards the thriller genre and helps audiences to establish this.
On this power point it shows my own investigations towards these techniques, I have challenged these and attempted to see if I can replicate these techniques into my own style, allowing me to understand if these can be usable and applied towards my own thriller production when I come to create it.
This task was a great experiment in seeing which techniques can be useful for me during the production of my thriller sequence opening, I looked into a variety of different effects and camera shots and evaluated these, reflecting upon if I can do these or not for my own work.
