This page focuses on the production of our groups final piece, here I've recorded our activities throughout each day, including traveling to each location, shooting through the shot log, any re shoots that we thought may had to be redone, and our thoughts and plans from this, all of which are relevant in accordance to our planning and research stages.
Team work was relied on heavily throughout the production stage, this included the work from all our team members and also the supporting actors who helped to film the final piece, without anyone of us, the production would not of been well formatted, resulting in an disorganized final piece.
Team work was a very important element for success, I found that this was one of our strengths, each member involved in our team provided a crucial role towards the completion of our thriller opening, and looked upon it in a pleasing and positive manner, especially our teams supporting actors who hasn't film acted before, yet still was happy to be involved and acted extremely well to make the production a high success for us.
Whilst watching through the final draft of our production our teams effort and work will be shown through this, prompting a highly refined final piece that we can all be proud of.
Our team members and actors who helped raise the success for our production is,
Team Members:
Abigail Bacon Danielle Duffy
Grace Crawford
Supporting Actors:
Mark Bacon
Anastasia Woodhouse
Ellie Fowler
Day 1: Filming, Sunday 29th November 2015 9:00am-4:30pm
On this day, Abby, Danielle and myself were meeting up to make a start on our
final piece sequence, everything what was worked for throughout the planning and research has finally come down to creating this final piece, so everything had to be completed up to a suitable and refined standard that our team could look upon and be proud.
Our day consisted of non stop filming for our production, we were very time conscious as we had the day to film our shots yet despite this it would soon begin to get dark after 4pm, consequently creating darkness in our shots, something that was preferably not to be interfered with for our final piece.
As one of the main characters in the role I was there to shoot scenes in sync with our shot log, something of which became a very reliable resource throughout and behind scenes, another role I contributed upon was (when not in shots) aid help and assistance to Danielle who acted as camera operator, filming the shots throughout the day.
We started off the day by filming our breakfast scene at 9am than at 12pm walked down to the woods to begin shooting the next scenes outside in the woods, this progressed until 4pm.
This was the location that we filmed outside, it was perfect
for us as we wanted to create that eerie location yet not have so many members
of the public creating unwanted background for us. Our group along with the
supporting actors spent the day filming scenes for the production of our final
piece inside the woods from 12pm-4pm.
Production Diary Day 1:
This prezi documents what happened on the first day of
filming with images to visually present what happened, I've also discussed on
my thoughts and feelings towards the first day of production and if our group
faced any problems.
It was important to document the days we went off to film,
visually showing what task roles each member took reflecting their contribution
towards the production.
After the first day of filming was completed, I managed to complete this diary later on at night as the day was still fresh in my mind, I clearly managed to evaluate our groups actions on this day and what roles were taken towards the production of our final piece.
Nevertheless, I find that the first day of filming went down a great success and we managed to get a lot of shots done, each member of the team worked very hard and placed in a lot of effort towards our final piece.
Shot Log from Day 1 of Filming:
Below is the shot log based on our first day of filming, before I could start to edit the first footage I had, it was important for me to watch over all pieces of footage and evaluate them first, this stage is important for me as it shows any errors, or potentially any bits of footage that may need to be re shot for the next scheduled film date.
It also gives me a chance to decide which footage would be best to be placed into our production, as I will be managing all footage received from filming and importing this onto the editing software Adobe Premiere Pro, its important for me that I check over all footage to ensure that no unwanted sound nor background is exposed, or if any unfocused shots or anything else that may not look right be included in the editing software as this could potentially pull our groups mark down and not appeal to audiences in any sought of way.
As main editor for our groups production, I found that it was necessary for me to analyse all footage taken from each filming day to ensure the overall efficacy of each shots, that way I can decide upon the quality of each footage and place the successful ones into Adobe Premiere Pro ready for editing.
After I created my shot log for the first day of filming, I was able to look through all the suitable and effective footage that I could import over when I come to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro I found this important as I needed to know what scenes I could/could not use, and if so what scenes needed editing to make it better.
The shot log will be a useful aid to me when I start to edit the footage, the additional notes at the end will notify me of any scenes that may need cutting or the speed increasing/decreasing.
The footage was judged upon camera angle, sound, background, acting quality and other such aspects to ensure the overall success of our production, Through the Lens.
Judging by the footage in the shot log, their was some scenes that I felt need to be re shot, this was due to the high wind audio, shaky camera or blurry footage, so when we come round to film for the second time, I would be sure to have a list of scenes that we will need to re shoot and to improve the production.
Day 2: Filming, Saturday 5th December 2015, 10 pm-4 pm
On the second day of filming, we all met up at 10 am at Abby's house to continue the shots from last week of shots 72-145, these were to take place inside Caddington Woods, all actors and team members were presented at the time (excluding Anastasia Woodhouse who had already finished all outstanding shots on the 29th).
We started walking down at around 10:15 am and was all set up and ready to film by 10:30 am, again we wanted another early start to ensure that the light will be clear in order to get our same shots the same.
Our second day consisted of non-stop filming for the shots that were needed to complete for our production. On this day, I got to film scenes that had characters Ellie and Abby in, familiarizing myself with the camera and how it works, I got to use both the schools and Danielle's camera working from both handheld shots and also using the tripod, exploring technical shots such as zoom in and outs.
I also reprise my role of character Grace, whom we see emerge from the woods having just discovered the bloody phone, here my acting skills were put to the test, displaying high emotions of paranoia, fearfulness and anxiousness, I needed my acting ability to seem raw and authentic to audiences, making the production seem realistic as a whole.
Production Diary Day 2:

Production Diary Day 2:
I found that the second day of filming was as successful as the first day, in fact I enjoyed this day a lot more, I found myself completing a wide range of tasks including filming and starring, as well as other such tasks like contributing my skills of theatrical makeup to give a more realistic approach to our ending scenes and also aiding Abby in one of the most important (and potentially most difficult) scenes of the production, which was the hand across the phones screen footage, I felt everything went really well today despite minor set backs at the starting consisting of a missing camera prop however despite this, our group managed to get past this, cleverly devising a narrative structure where we can continue filming.
The only problem for me again would be the audio, as both days of filming have ended, each consisting of roughly the same weather forecasts of high winds, I worry that this will interfere greatly within our piece and may over power the sound of characters dialogue when I come to edit. Audio and sound will need to be one of the main things that I need to work on, especially as its one of our groups criticisms from our prelim where dialogue was hard to hear, so I'm determined to work on this so that dialogue is clearly understandable for audiences, clearly setting in the narrative so its easier to understand.
Shot Log from Day 2 of Filming:
After the 5th December, I created a second shot log based on the second day of filming, this was again evaluated by me analysing all footage taken from that day so that I can evaluate the overall efficiency of each footage as a whole and decide on what ones are best to be placed into our production.
I felt that it was essential for myself to evaluate all footage taken on the days we had to film, to decide on all shots successful enough to be imported onto Adobe Primere pro, for our production, as I took on the role of lead editor for the production, I will be reviewing all clips that will be imported onto our final piece, so it was essential for me to evaluate them first to ensure which ones are best to be placed into our final piece as we want our production to be as great as it can be.
Overall, the completion of this shot log was highly effective for me, I looked at all footage filmed and evaluated them in terms of location, acting, sound and dialogue, allowing me to easily choose which pieces of footage can be imported into the production. I choose only the best to guarantee the overall quality of our final production piece.
Shot logs, for me were vital for identifying what shots I can place into our groups production, and also what things I would need to do before importing it onto Adobe Premiere pro, so notes like cutting footage or shots being too slow consisted of many things that I had to do after I imported the footage over to the editing software and placing it on the timeline along with other footage. The shot log was a good guide in helping me to decipher which shots can be suitable for our production and if any needed altering before this, it saved myself a lot of time and allowed me to focus on technical editing to improve our production.

Day 3: Filming, Saturday 12th December 2015, 1pm-4pm
On the second day of filming, we all met up a little later than usual as we only needed to re film dialogue parts and we knew this wouldn't take much time, so we all met up at Abby's house at 12pm and walked down at 12:15pm all ready to re film shots to improve the overall sound quality for our production.
As a group we felt more optimistic in terms of capturing characters dialogue as this time we were allowed to bring a boom mic to aid us for when we re film the dialogue parts, so hopefully cutting out all background wind ambiance and focusing more on dialogue amongst the characters.
This day required re filming on location two, Caddington woods, where the weather and lighting was the exact same as it was for the previous filming sessions also so this definitely worked in our favour.
Our third day of filming consisted of re filming all characters dialogue using the boom mic and also additional shots that the group felt that we needed to include to add more thriller elements within our production to give the opening a more dramatic yet exciting feel to it, creating that suspense for audiences.
My tasks roles on this day consisted of reprising my character Grace and her dialogue and necessary shots that she had to be, as well as offering technical support to Danielle as I either filmed scenes via camera or hold the boom mic up the right height to capture dialogue and eliminate wind background sound.
Myself and Abby also took turns in directing ours and Ellie's characters between shots, taking the shot list into consideration and discussing upon characters actions and presence, and ensuring that the new shots are exactly like the previous ones taken so that nothing appears to be different.
Production Diary Day 3
Below, I've created another Prezi PowerPoint in which I've analysed the third day of filming in detail, discussing upon how things went, and maybe what didn't go so well, and overall how successful this day of re filming was.
Primary pictures have also been uploaded onto this Prezi to show the groups work throughout the day and what kind of tasks needed to be fulfilled in order to strengthen the success of our production.
I found this day to be very successful indeed, it has defiantly restored my peace of mind of the constant worrying of background audio being too strong, with the use of the boom mic used today, I can confidently be able to walk away from todays work happy with everything and nothing to worry about, with the new footage in place, I can successfully go on to evaluating each piece of footage and start importing it over, replacing it with the old footage and than make a start on background music.
Shot Log from Day Three Filming
I also evaluated the shots that were filmed on the third day, I wanted to do this before I started exporting the shots over to Adobe Premiere pro as there were some shots that were re filmed due to sound issues, so again I needed to ensure the best quality footage that can be easily understood by audiences and replace the old ones with these ones filmed on the third production day.
That way with the footage for the production day been successfully evaluated and commented upon in the shot log, I can than decide on which one is most suitable to replace the old piece of footage.
I'm glad that I managed to evaluate footage taken from the three days that our group had to film, it served as an excellent guide for me when I came to edit, especially as editing was my main role and I was in charge of the positioning of each piece of footage and which ones to upload. I felt it a big responsibility when it came to deciding upon which footage to import and upload so the shot log proved an excellent resource for me to watch over them first (and again if necessary) and decide which ones are most suitably for our production, it was an excellent guide and a starting base, I probably could not of been able to have imported successful shots into our production with out the helping hand of my shot logs.
Overall
For me I found that the three days our group and supporting actors used to film went down a great success, each person involved served as an important member towards our production, our group would not of been able to have created a sequence without them. Each supporting member was very valuable to us and played their roles in a very coherent and professional manner, fulfilling each task up to the best of their ability and being present when requested.
For me the group members, being Abby, Danielle and myself were very dedicated towards our production, Through the Lens and very committed in getting the job done up to a high standard, each member was very valued and flexible, arranging suitable times throughout the weekends and helping out during these times, all members were present for each filming day and helped out in every way possible, our determination in producing a successful thriller opening will defiantly be seen through our final piece.
